Property Giant EcoHouse Brazil Comment on Brazilian Protests

EcoHouse, a leading Brazilian developer and specialist in Minha Casa, Mina Vida affordable home developments, issues the following statement about the recent protests sweeping the country.

The current Brazilian government has won three elections on a platform of strong economic growth accompanied by a social transformation that will reduce poverty and improve housing and public services. To achieve this, it has launched a number of social projects. One of the most prominent is the Minha Casa, Minha Vida (My House, My Life) social housing programme, under which EcoHouse is building thousands of homes.

The message now coming from millions of Brazilians is that the promised social transformation is not happening quickly enough. The protestors want reform and it is likely that among the changes will be the expansion of social projects including Minha Casa, Minha Vida (MCMV).

The government has already shown its continued and increasing commitment to Minha Casa, Minha Vida with the recent launch of Minha Casa Melhor (My House Improved), which will allow anyone registered with MCMV to purchase furniture, televisions and household appliances through government backed credit cards with a subsidised 5% interest rate.

EcoHouse has been impressed with the proactive response of the Brazilian government to the protests. This week, President Dilma Rousseff unveiled her plans to improve Brazil’s infrastructure and public services and increase transparency in government departments.They include tougher sentences for corrupt politicians, a commitment to spend a further R$50 billion on improving transportation in cities and to reinvest all royalties from oil discoveries in the education system and a new drive to recruit foreign doctors to communities where qualified Brazilians are unavailable.

Since the protests started, there has been intense debate on whether Brazil should be spending money on hosting the World Cup and Olympics over the next three years. EcoHouse’s position on these events remains unchanged. The company is unequivocally supportive of the 2014 Brazil World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics, both of which were key factors in EcoHouse’s decision to develop in Brazil.

Some argue that money spent on sporting events could instead be used for infrastructure and public services, but EcoHouse believes that hosting these events will offer Brazil the quickest possible path to an improved standard of living for its citizens.

In Natal, where the company is based, the World Cuphas been the catalyst for much needed improvements in infrastructure and the construction of the new Sao Goncalo do Amarante International Airport, which will give Natal’s tourism industry an unprecedented boost and create tens of thousands of new jobs in the city.

EcoHouse is confident that the government will continue to respond to the protests and deliver the quicker social transformation that Brazilians are demanding. EcoHouse has always been keen to see improved public services in Brazil, and the protests have only served to reinforce the company’s commitment to ensure all developments have easy access to primary transport links.
